The base of the large hill and a glimpse of the statues at the temple of Abu Simbel

The base of the large hill and a glimpse of the statues at the temple of Abu Simbel

The statues at the temple of Abu Simbel are located in the front of a hillock with the inner sanctum of the temple located inside the hillock. It is a pretty large structure, created when the temple was moved from a lower location to a higher location (to avoid being submerged by the rising waters of the Lake Nasser, formed due to the construction of the high dam at Aswan). In this photo, you can see the hillock and the front section of the statues.
