The Jallianwala bagh memorial in the city of Amritsar is located in a fairly crowded area, right next to the Golden Temple. It is in the midst of buildings, which line the garden on all sides.

The Jallianwala Bagh was the scene of a great massacre in the year 1919, when British troops under the command of their officer, General Dyer, fired on a mass of protesters, chanting for Indian independence. Hundreds of the unarmed protesters died, and more than a thousand were injured. The garden was built in honor of those who died.

This was a sign next to the wall where there are a number of bullet marks at the rear end of the Jallianwala Bagh. The actual wall is slightly cordoned off so that people cannot directly touch the bullet marks. It is a poignant reminder of the horrors faced by the people clamoring for Indian independence.
