Many years back, the tourism industry in Egypt suffered pretty badly because of terrorism related issues, and hence there was a focus on providing additional security at all the tourist related sites, with the police force being equipped with far more deadly weapons in order to thwart terrorism. In the Abu Simbel temple in south Egypt, because of its isolated location, the need to put in more security was also high. Here, you can see the vehicles carrying police personnel along with police officials and tourists near the parking area of the Abu Simbel temple.

The driver of the vehicle taking us from the city of Aswan to the isolated temple of Abu Simbel in the southern Egyptian region of Nubia. The temples were located far away from modern civilization centers, they were in fact meant to showcase to the southern neighbors of Egypt about the power of the Egyptian pharaohs. Getting to the temple from Aswan can be done by boat, flight, or by road. We went by road, and since almost the only vehicles on the road were the tourist convoys (with vehicles traveling some distance apart), it was an easy drive for the driver (I would suppose the only problem would be to ensure that he does not fall asleep because of the sameness of the terrain over which he was driving.

Abu Simbel is a spectacular site with a lot of historical significance. It was a temple constructed to show the grandeur of the Pharaoh Ramesses II, also as an indicator to visitors from the region of Nubia (Sudan) that they would be better off not trying to do any kind of military misadventure in Egypt.
It is located 280 km away from the nearest city of Aswan, and takes a long journey to get there. After arriving there, and getting off from the vehicle, there is a need to stretch and unwind (also, since this is a dry region even though the river is next door, do watch the weather before you get there).

There is a fine road that leads to the Hatshepsut mortuary temple, near Lexus, but the region surrounding the road still is deserted, pretty much like a desert. In this photo, you can see one of the few vehicles that are useful for traveling on such a terrain, namely a jeep. For people from the Egyptian department maintaining these sites, or people doing excavation or restoration, the jeep is a very useful vehicle.
