A view of one of the fountains in Trafalgar Square

A view of one of the fountains in Trafalgar Square
This is a view of one of the fountains in Trafalgar Square. These are pretty large fountains, with a small pool surrounding them; on hot days, they can be a godsend. Just behind the fountain, you can see a building with the Flag of South Africa (South Africa House, the South African high commission) - there were plenty of anti-apartheid demonstrations here during the time when South Africa was ruled on the basis of apartheid.

Nelson's column obscured by a tree

Nelson's column obscured by a tree
A photo of the most prominent part of Trafalgar Square in London, Nelson's column (there is a large tree that is somewhat covering the view, although I liked the photo with the tree - a blend of nature versus the structures created by man). The column was completed in 1843 and commemorates the death of Admiral Horatio Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

The sculpture 'Model for a Hotel 2007' by Thomas Schütte

The sculpture Model for a Hotel 2007 by Thomas Schütte
The sculpture 'Model for a Hotel 2007' by Thomas Schütte rests on the 4th plinth of Trafalgar Square. The other 3 plinths are occupied by statues, George IV (northeast, 1840s), Henry Havelock (southeast, 1861, by William Behnes), and Sir Charles James Napier (southwest, 1855). The 4th plinth was never occupied by a statue due to a lack of funds, and has been holding temporary structures as a demonstration of art. Currently, the idea is that the 4th plinth will showcase works by contemporary artists, and there is no general agreement on putting up a permanent structure.

Wellington Arch (from right in front)

Wellington Arch (from right in front)
We were in a Hop On/Off red tourist bus, doing the traditional tour of London, and spent quite some time around the traffic island on which the Wellington Arch is located, and got enough time to take a pretty good look at it. It looks beautiful, and there were a fair number of people over there, going close to the arch. We did not get time to do that, but will surely do that some other time.

The Wellington Arch in Hyde Park Corner

The Wellington Arch in Hyde Park Corner
The Wellington Arch (also called Constitution Arch) is now at the center of a big traffic island located south of Hyde Park in central London. It is meant to commemorate the victories over the French in the Napoleonic Wars, and the arch was finally unveiled in 1830, and in 1846, a statue of Sir Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (and Prime Minister) was unveiled in an equestrian pose on top of the arch.

Sun shining off a building in London

Sun shining off a building in London
This is a photo of the sun shining off the glass window of a building in London. The architecture of the buildings in London never cease to amaze me (they seem so well-preserved). This is a spot just at the entrance to the Green Park (the other end of Green Park points to Buckingham Palace)

The sun over Buckingham Palace

The sun over Buckingham Palace
The sun shining bright over Buckingham Palace in London. I like these kind of photos, where the sun flares over the top of a building; in this case, I managed to get the sun flaring over the top of the residence of the Queen of England.

Another view of the marching contingent in front of Green Park

Another view of the marching contingent in front of Green Park
Another view of the marching contingent, rather soldiers on horseback. They have already gone past the Victoria monument and are right in front of the big wrought iron gate of the Green Park.
